Which Email Service Should I Choose?
We offer three ways to send your transactional emails: the built-in mail server, Postmark, and Mailjet. Each has its own
advantages and trade-offs:
Built-in Mail Server
- Server location: Same server your apps are hosted on (full control)
- GDPR: Strongest control, no third-party handling
- Data retention: Only what you configure (e.g. storage, backups)
- Attachment limits: You decide when setting up the mail server
- Upside: Full independence, data never leaves your server
- Downside: Deliverability can depend on IP reputation and DNS setup (SPF, DKIM, DMARC)
Postmark
- Server location: US-based (with GDPR compliance options)
- GDPR: Supports GDPR with retention controls
- Data retention: 45 days by default
- Attachment limits: Up to 10 MB per email (including attachments)
- Upside: Excellent deliverability for transactional emails, automated reputation handling
- Downside: Data processed outside the EU (potential GDPR consideration), retention longer by default unless adjusted
Mailjet
- Server location: EU-based (France & Germany)
- GDPR: Fully GDPR-aligned, ISO 27001/27701 certified
- Data retention: Retention policies vary by plan, less flexible than Postmark
- Attachment limits: Up to 15 MB per email (via SMTP/API)
- Upside: EU jurisdiction, slightly bigger attachment size, good mix of transactional + marketing features
- Downside: Deliverability not as strong as Postmark for critical transactional emails
TL;DR:
- Choose Built-in if you want maximum independence and control
- Choose Postmark if you want top-tier deliverability and don’t mind US servers
- Choose Mailjet if you prefer EU hosting and slightly larger attachments
